March- Community Helpers

Happy Spring Break!
We have had so much fun learning all about our community helpers this month. We began the month learning about doctors and dentist and ended the month learning all about construction workers.

In the science center we constructed our own buildings using toothpicks and marshmallows. During our doctors unit we used our magnifying glasses to explore x rays of various parts of our bodies.

In the art center we explored various materials that our community helpers may use to help them do their jobs.  During our weeks when we were learning about construction workers: we practiced our cutting skills by cutting up paint samples and used popsicle sticks to resemble wood to design and build a house. During our doctors unit, we created a first aid kit filled with many of the necessary supplies. While we were learning about dentist we used toothbrushes to paint shapes and to help clean a yellow tooth. We also sorted foods that are good for our teeth and foods that are bad for our teeth.

In table toys this month we brushed off the shape cavities from our shape tooth, we practiced turn taking skills while playing the game of operation, used popsicle sticks to build shapes, and created patterns with our hammer and golf tees.

In literacy we practiced our story retelling and sequencing skills by retelling simple stories, we built letters using popsicle sticks, and designed/created the beginning letter of words using wiki sticks.

Our dramatic play center was very popular this month! This center was transformed into a construction site, dentist office, and doctors office. The friends explored play as a construction worker and used various materials to build and design. They also took turns exploring play as a doctor or dentist and patient.

Our favorite part of the month was when our local community helpers came to visit. We enjoyed our visit with the fire fighters from station 12 and the dental hygienist from the community health class at Wake Tech.

We also loved when Mr. Lee, one of our Frankie Lemmon board members, came to read to us for Read Across America Day. The kids were so excited for the goodies that he and his wife made and brought to us!

We will begin our Spring unit after we return from Spring break!

As the weather gets warmer, please send in a weather appropriate change of clothes for your child. We will send the winter clothes home once we have the warm weather clothes!

We hope everyone has a wonderful Spring Break!!!
